A history of the
United States cannot be complete without discussion of the
American Indians, also known as First Nations. To this end The
World & I Online offers a unique educational resource: a special
collection presenting nearly eighty feature-length essays
concerned with Indian culture, history, and contemporary issues.
The collection offers scholarly insight into the lifestyles and
beliefs of diverse Indian societies, discusses their place
during significant chapters in our history, and considers their
circumstances today. Though Indians are often misunderstood and
neglected by modern society, their story can inform, empower,
and enrich us all.
To allow the reader to focus on specific areas of interest,
articles are arranged by both theme and geographic region. It is
our hope that this extensive collection will increase students’
sensitivity to Indian concerns and will help illuminate the
proud heritage of America’s First Nations.
